With a net salary of 1,500 euros per month, the question of RSA often arises in modest households. The answer depends less on gross salary than on the composition of the household and the overall resources considered by the CAF. A single person earning 1,500 euros will not be in the same situation as a couple with children where only one partner works.

The calculation of RSA is based on household resources, not on an isolated salary

Your payslip is not enough to determine your rights. The CAF adds up all household income: salaries, housing allowances, alimony, capital income. This total is then compared to a flat rate amount that depends on your family situation.

A single person receiving 1,500 euros net significantly exceeds this flat rate amount. In this configuration, there is no right to RSA.

In a couple, the situation changes a bit. If only one partner works at 1,500 euros, the flat rate increases with the size of the household. Despite this increase, 1,500 euros generally remain above the threshold, even with dependent children.

As explained by the Banqueroute site for RSA, the calculation also includes a partial accumulation mechanism that can alter the result in certain specific cases.

RSA and accumulation with a salary: the mechanics of activity supplement

Receiving a salary does not necessarily eliminate all rights to RSA. RSA works as a differential supplement: it fills the gap between your actual resources and the flat rate amount your household can claim.

In practice, the CAF does not deduct 1 euro of RSA for every euro earned. The calculation takes into account an activity bonus that allows you to retain part of the RSA when you take up employment. The amount paid corresponds to the difference between the flat rate (increased by this bonus) and the total resources of the household.

Returning to work and the three-month rule

Were you receiving RSA before landing a job at 1,500 euros? During the first three months of work, your entire RSA is maintained. No recalculation occurs during this period. This system aims to encourage the resumption of activity.

In the fourth month, the CAF recalculates your rights with your new income. For a single person, RSA drops to zero in the vast majority of cases. A couple with children where only one partner works may still receive a small supplement for a few months.

Part-time and fixed-term contracts: more favorable situations

Do you earn 1,500 euros on a fixed-term contract or part-time rather than a full-time permanent contract? The logic of calculation remains the same, but fluctuating income works in your favor. The CAF relies on a quarterly declaration. A month at 1,500 euros followed by a month without income significantly alters the average taken into account.

  • In short fixed-term contracts (one to three months), full accumulation applies for the entire duration of the contract if it does not exceed three months
  • In stable part-time work, the RSA supplement can last as long as your monthly income remains below the threshold calculated for your household
  • In temporary work, each assignment triggers a quarterly reassessment, which often leaves a residual right between two assignments

Activity requirement with France Travail: a condition often overlooked

Beyond the ceilings and amounts, a recent change alters the situation for beneficiaries. Since 2025, maintaining RSA requires a commitment to activity of 15 to 20 hours per week, supervised by France Travail.

In practice, this mutual commitment contract can take several forms: collective workshops, qualifying training, business immersions, structured job search procedures. Failing to meet these commitments can lead to a suspension of payments.

Exemptions for certain profiles

If you earn 1,500 euros and your partner applies for RSA while unemployed, it is the applicant who is subject to this obligation. However, certain profiles may benefit from an adjustment or exemption:

  • Single parents without childcare solutions for a young child
  • People with recognized disabilities or invalidity
  • People suffering from health issues documented by a doctor

The exemption is not automatic: it must be requested and validated by France Travail on a case-by-case basis.

Declaring your resources to the CAF: the trap of overpayment

The CAF requests a declaration of resources every quarter. All household income must be included: salaries, housing assistance received, income from assets. Any omission can lead to an overpayment that the CAF will demand back.

RSA is calculated based on the income from the previous quarter. If you started a job at 1,500 euros in January, it is the April declaration that will include this income. This delay can create an illusion of entitlement, followed by a harsh reminder.

To limit this risk, declare any change in situation as soon as it occurs in your online CAF space. Real-time regularization reduces the amount of any potential overpayment.

A couple with children where only one partner earns 1,500 euros may sometimes be entitled to an RSA supplement of a few dozen euros. This amount may seem small, but it also opens access to related rights: social energy tariffs, complementary health solidarity, transport reductions. Checking eligibility remains relevant even when the RSA amount seems negligible.
